It’s become cyclical. And it happens more and more every year, as NBA, NFL, MLB, WNBA and even NIL players forget “All Eyes on You”.
Even the most innocent utterance on TV or radio, or on social media can take a huge toll out of your fan base, your industry and (hell, your paycheck). And it absolutely kills me to watch over and over how some of our favorite young icons trip over their tongues or make gestures which unfortunately get misinterpreted by the public. I have to admit some of it is egregious. Some of you are certified crazy! I digress (besides, sometimes so am I). But in any case, by the time it hits the media, it’s over. I won’t mention the names or examples of people who are currently sitting on the sidelines or in their living rooms “watching” the sport or performance that they once excelled at.
But I have actually met people at combines and draft night-watched them play in big time games-only to see them sidelined because of the almighty tongue.
And the biggest part of the problem? Well, when you’re all-of-a-sudden sitting on a pile of cash and you’re an up-and-coming star in the NBA or NFL or in any profession, who’s going to tell you no? Who’s going to tell (fill in the blank) how he or she is supposed to conduct themselves in public or to “pump the brakes”? Not if they want to remain in the inner circle and be part of the “po$$e”…feel me?
